There is a giant bruhaha in the photography business right now. It seems that an unhappy bride has posted all the photos from her wedding that was shot by a world famous photographer. The photos are poor by anyone’s standards. This woman paid six thousand dollars for crap.

I once did a trade with a photographer who was visiting from the mainland. The deal was this person would photograph my family and I would photograph hers. This person told me she was shooting 60 weddings a year so I figured she was good. Her website had some nice samples. Got the photos and they were not good. I mean out of focus and over exposed not good.

Kauai is a world class wedding destination. That has brought a lot of new photographers into the market. Many of them are not good. How do you the customer who is planning a wedding or family portrait on Kauai know you will be hiring a competent photographer? A photographers website shows the best work they have but is that a realistic representation of their abilities? I recommend asking to see a few finished jobs. It should be a giant red flag if a photographer won’t show a completed job or two.

It has been a rainy week on Kauai since Christmas. Major thunderstorms and flooding. Luckily I have not had to cancel any appointments during my busy holiday season. Not really a season, more like a really busy week between Christmas and new years. Either there was a small break in the weather or we moved indoors like we did with the Marzette group in Princeville. They were a big fun family that I photographed in the clubhouse of the Windham Resort. Most of the major resorts will charge a site fee for a family portrait and have outrageous insurance demands of me. The Windham really stepped up to help when it was raining hard.

The weather is clearing today but still has some high clouds and vog from the south winds. I have a family portrait this afternoon which should have some nice diffused light. I rarely cancel a family portrait unless we have days of straight rain. One of the great reasons to reserve a photo session with me is that when I need the Kauai weather to cooperate it usually does.
